Disneyland 1975 (Prince John at America the Beautiful)

I just discovered this photo of me in Disneyland from 1975. I haven’t seen it in more than 40 years!  That’s Prince John from “Robin Hood” that I’m giving a big hug to – he looks remarkably the same today! Also in that batch of photos I discovered are images from the groundbreaking Disneyland parade America on Parade, as the park was already celebrating America’s bicentennial.

My sister and I are at the entrance to Tomorrowland. Behind us, in what is now the entrance to Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters, is the CircleVision theater, presenting the 1967 America the Beautiful movie “in the round,” which just happened to lend itself perfectly to the bicentennial celebration.

As you can see, the movie was sponsored by AT&T at that time. Within the movie that was a tour of the United States, one segment visited  Hawaii, and was shot from the AT&T ship, Long Lines, which, as it was explained in the movie, was a ship to help expand and improve the worldwide telephone network by laying underseas cable across the Pacific, the Atlantic, and in the Caribbean. At the conclusion of the film, the AT&T commercial jingle, “Reach out and touch someone” would play as the audience exited.

I sure loved that film! For those that are not familiar with CircleVision, it was a 360 degree movie that completely encircled the audience as if you were really standing in whatever location was being shown. What amazing technology America the Beautiful was! This was before video, and this meant having to run nine film projectors simultaneously, and have them on a loop to be able to run continuous shows throughout the day. Disneyland’s original CircleVision movies required 11 cameras, but the updated America the Beautiful used wider film formats which meant less projectors were necessary. Did you know you can still see some more recent CircleVision movies today at Epcot?

Since 2009, the opening music from America the Beautiful can still be heard as part of the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln attraction at Disneland, and for me, it brings back such happy memories of the past, just as finding this old photograph did!

Yo ho everybody! I thought you’d enjoy this rare concept art by Marc Davis for the Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland. Marc was my favorite artist and responsible for creating so many of the classic scenes you see in attractions such as Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise and so much more. Marc started working for Disney as an animator and the first thing he animated was a scene in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” While he created characters such as Tinker Bell and Cruella De Ville, some of my favorite pieces were Marc’s characters that seemed to leap off the page – such as the various bears for the Country Bear Jamboree attraction. This Pirates artwork is a rough sketch for a scene that didn’t make it in the final attraction. I love it because it’s so rough, and different than a lot of Marc’s typically seen works, but still tells a story with humor. I’m grateful to Marc’s wife, Alice, another Disney Legend, for allowing me to scan it.

Disneyland 30th anniversary parade, 1985

“Thank you, Mickey, thank you Donald, let’s all give a cheer! The whole world wants to thank you, thank you for 30 happy years!” are the opening lyrics to this 1985 parade celebrating the 30th anniversary of Disneyland. Here’s a couple photos I took back in the day.

Disneyland window recipients in my upcoming interviews

Although it is my goal to one day have all my interviews posted here on Mouse Clubhouse, and I’m still catching up from past interviews, I’m still doing new ones whenever I can. The last three interviews I’ve done are all recipients of windows on Main Street in Disneyland, a great honor! And it was an honor to have the chance to sit down with them and learn their stories! From Jim Cora, whom Walt Disney personally tapped to be involved in the creation of the original Disney University, to Renie Bardeau who took some of the most famous photos of Walt Disney, to Ron Dominguez, whose home was what would become Disneyland and he went on to become one of the heads of the parks! I know you’ll love the interviews as much as I enjoyed capturing their stories for you! Here’s a little more info:

Renie Bardeau’s window is above the Main Street Photo Supply. It reads “Kingdom Photo Services – Renie Bardeau Photographer, Archivist,” a nod to Renie’s job as chief photographer

Jim Cora’s windows is above the Disney Clothiers and reads “Global Exports and Expats – Specializing in Land & Sea operations – Our Motto ‘The Sun Never Sets on our Magic Kingdoms’ – Jim Cora – Master Operator,” for Jim’s role as Chairman of Disneyland International

Ron Dominguez’s window is above the Market House and reads ” Orange Grove Property Mgt. – ‘We Care For Your Property As If It Were Our Own’ – Ron Dominguez – Owner” in reference to Ron’s family orange grove which was situated inside the current site of Disneyland

I’m so grateful to these wonderful people!

The Journey Into Imagination with Figment attraction in Epcot is a fun little ride that I just love. A fun fact is that the little dragon’s voice is that of Mouse Clubhouse friend Dave Goelz, who is best known as the original Muppet performer and voice of Gonzo!

To capture this very dark scene, I got decent results with an ISO of 6400. The ride didn’t move too fast, so I was able to move my shutter speed up to 1/160 and then bring my aperture down to 1.8.

Feel free to write or comment if you want any more details about the photos, such as settings I used, etc.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened on this day in 1998

On this April 22, 1998, Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened at the Walt Disney World Resort. Not coincidentally, it was Earth Day! Today it is one of the largest animal theme parks in the world. Home to more than 2,000 animals across 300 species, the park reflects Walt Disney’s dedication to conservation and is committed to animal care, education and research. The six lands include Oasis, Discovery Island, Africa, Rafiki’s Planet Watch, Asia and DinoLand, U.S.A. areas. The photo above is the thrilling Expedition Everest attraction, where you can careen through the Himalayan mountains on a speeding train while avoiding the clutches of the mythic Abominable Snowman.

Disney’s music man Stan Freese retires after 43 years

After 43 years, Stan Freese is retiring from Disney today. Stan began his career in the Walt Disney World band for the resort’s opening in 1971 and he became their first band leader! He soon moved to Disneyland where he led the Disneyland band and even fronted his own Disneyland big band at Carnation Plaza Gardens. Stan is retiring today as the director of talent booking for Disneyland.

I’m so grateful to Stan, not only for his friendship and all that he’s done for me over the years, for which I’m so grateful, but also for his support of Mouse Clubhouse! He’s responsible for a number of the interviews you see on here, and has been so kind to let me record some of his own stories, despite that there’s no way I can share some of them with you until he’s loooong retired from Disney! 🙂 You can read Stan’s interview here.

One of the things I love about Stan is his attitude – he’s just fun! I’m sharing a video below from a day where Stan and I were wandering around Disneyland, visiting some of the groups he hired, and we went over to the historic Tomorrowland Terrace stage, and the next thing I know, Stan pulls out a harmonica and is up on the stage with the band. And the crowd loved it! It’s such a wonderful memory for me, too!

Stan is truly responsible for helping to shape Disney entertainment as we know it today, and Shani & I wish him all the best in this new adventure in his life!

Jack Lindquist, Disneyland/Disney World marketing genius has passed away

During the Disney employee Christmas parties, you never knew who might be working or where they'd be. I took this photo in 1993 when Jack Lindquist was driving passengers on a Main Street vehicle. The party hadn't started and Jack was just sitting in the vehicle waiting. I was in, since I was also going to work on an attraction and I asked him for a ride. This was the first time I got to talk with Jack, being driven by him up and down Main Street in Disneyland.

We’re so sorry to hear about the passing of our friend Jack Lindquist. We’ll sure miss getting together with him and hearing his wonderful stories, but we’re pleased to share some of them with you below! He was truly Disney royalty!

Jack Lindquist was Disneyland’s first advertising manager, beginning in 1955. He continued with the company in marketing for Disneyland. Walt Disney World and international Disney resorts. His many accomplishments include the creation of the Disneyland Ambassador program, the creation of the Walt Disney Travel Company, the international waters ceremony for the opening of the it’s a small world attraction, Disney Dollars, and in 1990 Jack became the first president of Disneyland.

Below are links to four conversations I had with Jack, that I think you’ll really enjoy!
